9 Mar 1863 Anna C Williams born at Paoli, Orange, IN; Doc Rhetts and Anna Williams were in the same class (Class of 1881) at Salem High School (total of seven students in Class of 1881). In the fall of 1885 they were married (they were both age 22). They were married for 14 years before she died. Sometime after her death, he moved into Martha Barksdale’s house as a boarder. A year later, he married Nellie Routh who was Martha Barksdale’s daughter. Story has it that she ran away. In 1907 Doc married Effie Maupin.

19 Jul 1863 John Edward Ratts (Rhetts) born Salem, Indiana; nine days after the Great Raid by Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan on Salem, Indiana on July 10, 1863; his parents were Francis Marion Ratts and Mary Ann Cooper.

1865-1871 Mary Ann Cooper, mother, died in Salem, IN; date not confirmed; she owned and operated the Millinery Shop on the Salem Square, later became E.B. Walker Millinery; family lived above the shop.

15 Jul 1870 Census shows him in Salem, IN living with his parents, Francis Marion Ratts and Mary Ann Cooper, and 3 brothers, William Albert, Francis Emmett, and Charles Andrew and sister Marie Antoinette; also listed in the Ratts household was Martha A Gibner, who became John Edward’s step-mother

4 Jun 1900 Census shows Effie Maupin living in Monroe, Washington, IN with parents, William Maupin 53 and Martha Ann Gordon 47, and sister Mary R Maupin 26 and brother Charles E Maupin 20; she was 17 years old (doc)

19 Jun 1900 Census shows him a widower living in Salem, IN living as a boarder in house of Martha J. Barksdale age 68 and a widower, and her daughter Nellie Routh age 32

20 Aug 1900 JER married Nellie Bowman Routh in Floyd, IN; they were married for 5-6 years

13 Aug 1902 Salem Democrat: Canton-Miss Effie Maupin is visiting Mrs. Bertha Gordon (who was the wife of Effie’s 1st cousin, William F. Gordon).”

22 Oct 1902 Brownstown Banner: “Miss Effie Maupin, of near Kossuth, returned from Indianapolis last Saturday, where she had been visiting relatives and friends.” (doc)

1902 Oct Salem Democrat: “Kossuth-Miss Effie Maupin has returned home after a few weeks pleasant visit with Indianapolis friends.”(doc)

Jul 1905 Salem Democrat: “Walnut Ridge-Miss Effie Maupin who has been in Indianapolis for some time, came down to spend the fourth with home folks.” (doc)

2 May 1907 JER married Effie Maupin in Louisville, KY; they were married for 52 years

8 May 1907 Salem Democrat: “Personal and Society- Married in Louisville—Thursday, May 2, 1907, Miss Effie D. Maupin to Dr. J. E. Rhetts. Dr. and Mrs Rhetts have gone to housekeeping in the groom’s residence on North High Street.” (doc)

6 Jan 1910 Columbus (IN) Republican: Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Rhetts left Tuesday morning [January 4] for Columbus, having shipped a part of their goods to that city last Saturday, with the idea of locating there permanently if the prospects prove to be all right. The doctor is a number one dentist, understanding his profession thoroughly, and with it an honest workman, giving good satisfaction to his patrons. He was elected councilman from the Fourth ward at the November election, showing that he has the confidence of the people of this community. 25 Mar 1910 Columbus (IN) Evening Republican: Easter Music in Local Churches: The choir of the Baptist church, under the direction of Dr. J.E. 3 Jul 1914 William G Maupin, Effie Maupin’s father, died in Salem, IN; he was a farmer and had served in Co B 16th Indiana Infantry and in Co M of the 23th Indiana Cavalry during the Civil War and served in defense of Huntsville, Alabama against Buford’s Confederate forces and then to the defense of Paducah, KY and finally to the battle at Murfreesboro in 1864 and 1865.

9 Apr 1930 JER listed in 1930 Census as living at 109 N High St, Salem, IN. Also listed son Charles Edward age 19, and Effie Maupin, his wife age 47 (age at 1st marriage 23). List John Edward as age 22 at 1
st marriage. There were also 3 roomers living in house — Wilhelm Lommell age 24, a telegraph operator; Alvin E. Gessell, age 25, a dentist; and Ralph Miller, age 23, a public school teacher. House at 109 N High Street valued at $6,000. Census indicated that there was a radio in the house. (doc)

23 Jun 1937 Salem Leader: “The Trading Post located in the old Post Office building – It was back in September 1933 with just an armful of clothing to sell to her friends that started the Trading Post, which today is one of Salem’s busiest stores. This enterprise is owned by Mrs. J. E. Rhetts, who certainly has made a success in this line of business, and today you will find her store almost anything that you would wish for in the way of furniture, clothing, etc.” (doc)
